Anneke Esselbrugge

Anneke has long admired the intricate art of Raranga, or weaving, in Maori culture. In pursuit of this passion, she enrolled in the Toi Paematua program at Te Wananga in 2018-2019, where she achieved a Diploma in Maori and Indigenous Art at level 5. For Anneke, weaving is not just an art form, but a way to create practical yet beautiful pieces from the natural resources around her, particularly harakeke, or flax. She finds immense satisfaction in weaving and feels a deep sense of belonging as she connects with the ancient traditions of her craft. In her work, Anneke honors the knowledge and skills of past weavers and feels privileged to be able to contribute to preserving this rich cultural heritage.
